AI Citation Share is the percentage of relevant AI answers that name or link your brand as a source. If an engine answers 100 buyer questions in your category and cites you in 22 of them, your citation share is 22%. It measures how often you are part of the answer, not just whether you rank somewhere.
Citation share answers a simple question. Out of all the AI answers where your brand could reasonably be named, how often are you actually named? It is expressed as a percentage. A score of zero means you are invisible in that question set. A high score means the engines treat you as a default source.
The word share matters. This is not an absolute count. It is your slice of a fixed pie. If you and four competitors are the obvious candidates for a category, and the engines cite you in 30% of answers, the other 70% is going somewhere else. That makes citation share a directly competitive measure. You can only grow your share by taking it from someone, or by appearing in answers where nobody is currently cited.
To calculate it properly you need a defined prompt set. That is a list of real buyer questions in your category, run across the engines that matter. You then count how many of those answers cite your brand and divide by the total. The quality of the prompt set decides whether the number is meaningful. A narrow set flatters you. A realistic set, built from how buyers actually ask, tells the truth.
Citation share also has texture. A brand can have high share on broad category questions but zero share on the high-intent comparison questions that sit closest to a purchase. Two brands with the same headline share can have very different commercial value depending on which questions they win.
| Term | What it measures |
| Single mention | You appeared once, in one answer |
| Citation share | How often you appear across a whole prompt set, as a percentage |
| Source quality | Whether the sources behind those citations are strong |
Because answers vary between engines and shift over time, citation share is only useful when measured consistently. A one-off check is a snapshot. A repeated measure on the same prompt set is a trend, and a trend is what tells you if your work is paying off.
If you only ever check whether your brand shows up once, you will misread your position. The brand cited in 4% of answers and the brand cited in 40% can both honestly say they appear in AI results. The gap between them is enormous, and it is exactly the gap citation share exposes.
For most businesses the useful insight is not the headline percentage. It is where the share comes from. Winning informational questions builds awareness. Winning comparison and recommendation questions wins deals. Knowing your share split across those question types tells you whether your AI presence is decorative or commercial.
It also gives you a clean way to set a target. Improving from 12% to 25% citation share on your core buyer questions is a concrete, defensible goal that the whole team can rally behind.
Citation share is one of the core inputs to our AI Visibility Score, the 0 to 100 measure at the heart of our AI Visibility Strategy. We build a prompt set from your real buyer questions, run it across our three-engine stack of ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, and count how often you are cited against the competitors answering the same questions.
We do not stop at the headline number. We show you which question types you win and lose, which competitors hold the share you want, and which sources the engines lean on to produce those answers. That turns a percentage into a plan.
