Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google places above its classic blue links, answering a query directly and citing a handful of sources.

Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated answers Google places at the top of its results page, above the classic list of links. They summarise an answer to the query directly, drawing on web sources and citing a small selection of them. For many searches the Overview is the first and sometimes only thing a user reads, which makes being cited in it commercially important.

Why it matters

Why it matters

Google AI Overviews sit at the top of the page on a vast share of searches. Google AI Overviews now appear on the majority of searches, and they change how people behave. When the answer is on the page already, fewer users scroll to the links beneath it. 69% of Google searches end without a click (Similarweb, 2024), and AI Overviews push that trend further.

For a business, this is a quiet but serious shift. You can rank well in the classic results and still be absent from the Overview that sits above them. If the Overview names a competitor and not you, the user often never sees your link at all. The battleground has moved from the tenth blue link to the cited source inside the AI answer.

Overviews also frame the answer, not just list it. The few sources Google cites shape how the business or category is described. Being one of those cited sources means your version of the story reaches the user. Being absent means someone else's does.

How K&C uses Google AI Overviews

How K&C uses Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews are one of the three engines in our default tracking stack, alongside ChatGPT and Perplexity. We run your real buyer and category queries through Google and record whether an Overview appears, whether it names you, how it frames you, and which sources it cites. That feeds directly into the 12-pillar framework.

Overview results inform several pillars at once. Whether you are named feeds Direct Mentions. Whether you are suggested feeds Recommendation Rate. The cited sources feed Source Authority, and the way the Overview describes you feeds Sentiment and Framing. Because we also score ChatGPT and Perplexity, we can see whether Google agrees with the other engines or tells a different story.

One practical note we track for clients: Google retired FAQ rich results from its search results in May 2026, so tactics built around that feature no longer help visibility. Our work focuses on the signals that genuinely move citation inside Overviews. You can read the wider approach on our what is GEO page and see results on our see it in action page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Google AI Overview?
It is the AI-generated answer Google places above its classic blue links. It summarises a response to the query and cites a small set of web sources, often becoming the first thing a user reads on the results page.
Why does being cited in an AI Overview matter?
Because the Overview now appears on the majority of searches and many users never scroll past it. If the Overview names a competitor and not you, your link may never be seen. Being a cited source puts your business inside the answer itself.
Does K&C track Google AI Overviews?
Yes. Google AI Overviews are one of the three engines in our default stack, alongside ChatGPT and Perplexity. We record whether an Overview names you, how it frames you, and which sources it cites, then feed that into your AI Visibility Score.
