AI Visibility Volatility is the degree to which a brand's AI citations change from one run, engine or date to the next, even when nothing about the brand has changed.
AI Visibility Volatility is how much a brand's AI citations swing between runs, engines and dates. Ask an assistant the same question twice and it may cite you once and skip you the next time. This happens because the engines are probabilistic and their training and live data keep shifting. Volatility is why a single snapshot is unreliable and why re-measurement matters.
AI engines do not return fixed results. They generate answers probabilistically, so the same question can produce different sources, different wording and a different brand list on each run. The model also changes underneath you. Providers retrain, adjust ranking, and pull in fresh live data, so an answer that named you in March may not name you in June.
This is the trap of the single snapshot. A brand that runs one query, sees itself cited, and concludes it is winning may simply have caught a favourable run. A brand that sees itself absent may have caught an unfavourable one. Neither result, on its own, tells you where you really stand.
Volatility also varies by engine. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity each draw on different sources and weight them differently, so your visibility can be strong in one and weak in another. Treating the three as one blurs the picture. Measuring each separately, and repeatedly, is the only way to see the true, stable signal underneath the noise.
K&C builds volatility into the methodology rather than pretending it away. We run each buyer question multiple times across the three engines, so the AI Visibility Score reflects a pattern, not a lucky or unlucky single shot. A score backed by repeated runs is one you can trust and act on.
Volatility is also the reason cadence exists. A one-off measurement ages quickly, because the engines keep moving. That is why our work comes in Annual, Bi-Annual and Quarterly cadences, each bespoke priced. The faster your market and the more your competitors are active, the more often you need to re-measure to keep the picture current.
Re-measurement does two things. It confirms that improvements you made have actually moved the answer, and it catches drops early, before a competitor quietly takes the citation you used to hold. Without re-measurement you are steering on a photograph of a moving river.
We also distinguish real movement from noise. A single shift between two runs may mean nothing, but a consistent change across repeated runs and across engines is a genuine signal worth acting on. By tracking your score over time, we can tell you whether you are truly rising, holding or slipping, rather than reacting to the random wobble that volatility always produces. That is how measurement stays honest. Be Known. Be Cited.
