AVS Bands are the five named tiers that translate a 0 to 100 AI Visibility Score into a plain reading of how often AI engines name and recommend a business.
AVS Bands are the five tiers that group an AI Visibility Score into plain language: Ghost (0 to 10), Whisper (11 to 30), Emerging (31 to 50), Cited (51 to 75), and Known and Cited (76 to 100). The band tells you, at a glance, whether AI engines ignore you, mention you rarely, or recommend you with confidence.
A raw number on its own is hard to act on. A score of 38 sounds vague, but the band tells you what it actually means: you are Emerging, showing up in some answers but not yet a name an engine reaches for. The bands give a business a shared language for progress, so a board, a marketing team and an agency all read the same result the same way.
The bands also set realistic expectations. Most businesses we assess start in the Ghost or Whisper range, because AI engines simply do not name them yet. That is normal, not a crisis. With 37% of consumers now starting their searches with AI rather than Google (Conductor, 2025), the gap between a Whisper and a Cited business is the gap between being absent from the answer and being part of it.
Each band describes a different commercial reality. A Ghost business is invisible at the moment of recommendation. A Known and Cited business is the default answer, named first and framed well across engines. Knowing your band tells you how far the journey is and where to spend effort first.
Every K&C assessment produces an AI Visibility Score from 0 to 100, and we always report it with its band. The band frames the whole engagement: it sets the starting point in your Exec Brief and becomes the headline measure we move over time across the 12-pillar framework.
The five bands are fixed, so progress is honest. We do not move the goalposts between assessments. When a business climbs from Whisper to Emerging, or from Cited to Known and Cited, that shift is real and comparable to the last reading. The bands work the same way across all three engines we track: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity.
| Band | Score range | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost | 0 to 10 | AI engines do not name you. You are absent from the answer. |
| Whisper | 11 to 30 | Rare, faint mentions. You appear occasionally but are easy to miss. |
| Emerging | 31 to 50 | You show up in some answers but are not yet a name engines reach for. |
| Cited | 51 to 75 | You are regularly named and recommended across queries and engines. |
| Known and Cited | 76 to 100 | You are the default answer, named first and framed well. |
